Can Silicone Baby Products Be Sustainable?
Yes, they sure can be, in fact you may just be surprise at how many amazing products there are out there! You can buy your baby a dummy, teething ring, cutlery and even breast pumps. There really is so much choice out there, and my aim is to help you realise that silicone is a fantastic choice.
Silicone is formed from a chemical reaction to transform silica (sand) using 3 natural elements – oxygen, carbon and hydrogen.
Not only are the byproducts harmless, they are also useful to the environment, and even more amazingly the life-cycle of silicone ends exactly where is began when the discarded products deteriorate back into sand. Brilliant, isn’t it?
Silicone products are now a friend to the planet and they have played a major role in our continuing efforts to make our lifestyles more sustainable. It is eco-friendly and has a long life of reusability, thus reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, whilst playing a vital role in modern advancements toward sustainability.
FACT- A recent study determined that the average use of silicone products saved approximately nine times the greenhouse gases it required to manufacture them!
Feel confident in your purchase of silicone products, they are amazing!
Re-usable or Biodegradable nappies?
Let’s face it, we would all love to use disposable nappies, but for the eco conscious folk like us there is an alternative (albeit a dirtier one).
Reusable nappies have many different names, such as washable nappies, cloth nappies or real nappies. Thankfully they have evolved over the years to become much easier to use than they were ‘back in the day’ and are a now becoimg a popular choice for eco-conscious parents. They are no longer boring and now come in range of beautiful colours and soft fabrics. Another benefit is that they are just as easy too change as disposable nappies, who would have thought?!
However, the main thing that worried me, and probably worries you, is the upfront cost. Although over time reusable nappies work out cheaper than disposables, you will be paying more initially. To start with you will probably need around 16-24 nappies in total (especially in the first few months) but the costs will be lower overall in comparison to disposable nappies. It is estimated that it may cost around £80 for the cheapest brand of reusable nappiest, and then you have to factor in the costsof around £1 a week to wash them. If you are planning on having more than one child then the savings will be even greater if the nappies are used again.
There is one more alternative though – biodegradable nappies. It’s fantastic that we now have that choice however we must also take in to account that the manufacturing process and the time for them breaking down will probably make re-usable nappies a better choice. But hey, it’s a fantastic option as we are not all keen on using washable nappies.
With all this in mind you should feel confident about taking the plunge and using these fantastic eco-friendly products, weather it be washable or biodegradable ones.
What Other Sustainable Products Are There?
You will be amazed, just as I was, with all the different types of products to choose from. From strollers to playmats, from tableware to clothes – there really is a massive selection.
Most companies pride themselves on being eco-friendly and are producing fabulous products for us all to enjoy. Some stroller frames are constructed entirely from recycled plastic and the fabrics from recycled drinking bottles. Amazing! Even the footmuff and rain covers can be made from green materials.
Organic clothing? No problem! You should consider organic cotton clothing for your baby, and there are lots of reasons why. The main reason is that it means the cotton isn’t treated with pesticides and other toxins that are harmful to people and the planet, especially our little delicate babies. Organic cotton can also be super soft and snug, what’s not to like?
What about baby tableware? We have already spoken about silicone alternatives, but what if you had some delicious organic produce prepared and you wanted another choice of tableware to serve it on? Luckily you can choose organic bamboo, again free from BPA, PVC, lead, and Phthalates.
With so many choices you really can’t go wrong.
It is fortunate that we now have so many choices on the market to help us achieve our aim of being eco-concious, and it really does make our choice to be eco-friendly much easier. Many of these products are designed so well that it just adds to the overall benefits already there, such as being sustainable, organic and eco-friendly. The small extra cost for buying such goods are worth it in the long run. Not only are we protecting our baby, but we are protecting their planet and teaching them a valuable life lesson of being concious about our delicate environment.
